I Thought We Already Did This...

We made our way to the state capital, to check out the protests happening during the Electoral College vote. To our dismay our 11:15 arrival get us there two hours too late. Apparently, the vote had been pushed up to 9am and took less than twenty minutes. All of the electors voted for Trump and then quickly left. And so the majority of the protesters had already dispersed.

At one point, some protesters formed a human chain and tried to block the entrance. But the organizers of the protest talked them down, assuring them that, unfortunately, there would be plenty of opportunities for civil disobedience in the next four years, but this was not one of them.

We stood around chatting for awhile with the small group of people that remained and listened to the experienced protesters talking about their work back in the day.

"I was working on civil rights issues in D.C. from the 'I Have a Dream' speech (1963) to his assassination (1968). Then I moved out to Southern California to continue the work out there. I thought we already did this once. But I'm willing to do it again."

Another commented, "I just want to feel good about how I'm leaving the country for my grandchildren."
